Personality: Belle is the sort of person who refuses to take things at face value. Rather than read a book by it’s cover, she’d prefer to look beneath the surface and see the person underneath. She wants to believe the good in people, even when all evidence points to otherwise. It’s an opinion that many might see as naive, but to her it doesn’t matter what other people thing, as long as she’s doing what she believes is right.
Even those that she’s told so many times are ‘evil’ she will refuse to believe it until she sees it for herself, and even then, she knows that there is more to a person than the sum of their parts. Life turns people into those they become, but she believes in the purity of the heart, and that they can always change if they want to; and when they do? She will be there by their side to help them every step of the way.
Back in her own land, she always dreamed of living a life bigger than her own, fueled by a strong desire to prove herself, and to have the opportunity to be what she’d only ever read about in stories, being a hero and having adventures.
She does her best to be brave, even when she’s frightened, and she does it without thought for herself. If she had to sacrifice herself or put herself in danger to save someone she cared about, she would do it without a second thought. To her, friendship and loyalty is important, as important as anything could be, and she’d stand at the side of one she cares about, even if she knows it’s hard, and even when she knows the road ahead won’t be easy. She does it for them, because she thinks there’s hope.
At home, she had never truly had the opportunity to be independent, and though she longed for it, it was something simply not offered to her. She wants to make her life decisions for herself, and even when she was chosen by the Dark Lord to go along with him, she did so by her own choice. She loves her family, and when she was finally reunited with them, she was devastated by the fact he still wanted to control her.
Despite her desire for bravery, she doesn’t really realise just how brave she is. Instead of running from situations that might otherwise terrify anyone else, she faces them head on, not afraid of the confrontation.
Belle believes strongly in love. She isn’t content to live a life with someone that she doesn’t truly care for, and while she has something of an idealistic view on what love can be, she knows it isn’t a simple thing, and can be as difficult as it can be wonderful. She’s prepared to go through the turmoil if it is for someone she cares about.
Given her rather open mind, she finds it difficult to understand how people could be so closed minded. It angers and confuses her when people refuse to listen to reason, or accept that things might not have been what they first thought. It is perhaps because of this that she manages to handle change so well. When taken from her homeland and imprisoned, instead of hiding away, in fear she sees it as an opportunity to live her life differently, and experience in ways she never would have before.
That isn’t to say she isn’t troubled; she constantly worries that she won’t achieve her goals, won’t find a place for herself in the world, and more than anything, that she won’t be able to truly help those she loves.
Her desire to see the best in people, and to hope they will be the best they possibly can doesn’t mean she would stand there and say nothing when they didn’t do as she hoped. Quite the opposite, she is only too quick to speak up and tell people when they are in the wrong, and speak of her disappointment in them. As a friend though, she would like to think she’s someone people can confide in, ready to listen to any problem, and offer help if she can.
Having a largely sheltered life means there are still many things she has yet to experience. It’s a fact that fills her with both excitement and nerves. She wants to experience so much, to learn everything she can. She looks at the world with open eyes, not with pre conceived ideas.
At times she can appear as though she knows very little about the world, and in many ways she does, but that does mean she wants to take a back seat and let it pass her by. She’s not about to let that happen. She’ll live her life, but she’ll live it for herself.
Powers/Abilties: Belle doesn’t have any powers as such, but she likes to think she’s quite perceptive and a good listener. She has the ability to read and translate multiple languages.
She also makes a really good cup of tea.

[Her hand shakes a little as she presses the phone against her head. It rings out.]
Come on, come on. Pick up. Pick up.
[The phone continues to ring, but then there’s the click of an answerphone, and a curt message from ‘Mr. Gold’ speaks back to her.]
Rumplestiltskin? Rumple are you there? Please pick up. Are you there? Something-- something has happened. I’m in the library. The lights, they went off and the door is locked. Someone’s been here, I think they were looking for something. I need to talk to you. Need to know you’re okay. Please just, if you’re there, just answer the phone. Just let me know you’re okay. Please.
[The line goes dead and the last light in the library flickers out. Belle is left in darkness.]

There’s a silence in the shop, so silent that she can hear the gentle creak of the front door as the wind outside shifts it against its hinges. Her head doesn’t turn though, instead transfixed on the contents of the room. There were so many things here, so many things that he’d somehow brought over from their land. She didn’t know how, and she wasn’t going to ask, because it didn’t matter. None of that mattered.
Cautiously, she took a step forwards further into the room, her eyes scanning the cases of items in front of her. She wondered how many stories they had to tell, and how many of them involved him? How many things had he done that she hadn’t yet learned? Oh it wasn’t that she was under any illusion that his life hadn’t been full of dark and unpleasant things, more that she wondered how each of these had twisted him to what he’d become. Would she ever truly be able to help? It was a question that plagued her every day.
Yet amongst all those things, there it was, sitting atop a glass cabinet. The things that surrounded it were covered in dust, but not that, not the cup, pristine in every way apart from one little chip. Seeing it brought a smile to her face that seemed to erupt from ear to ear, like a light had turned on in her heart. Her gentle steps became quicker, and she stepped forwards, reaching down to lift the cup between her hands, stopping only to tuck her hair behind her ear as it fell.
As she turned the cup in her hands, her smile seemed only to widen. An echo of a laugh escaped from her lips, like a warm memory and she pressed the ceramic gently to her chest, a soft shake of her head to herself.
Because amongst all of this, there was hope, a tiny beacon of hope, and she was glad.
